People sometimes get confused on what to call that metal thingy that
automobile tires are mounted on.
Well, let's settle that now with a little history. Looking at the photo
below, the spare looks different than the tire touching the ground. even
though both are mounted and are aired up. The spare tire is mounted on
a "Rim". The tire on the ground is also mounted on a "Rim",
but the "Rim" is also mounted on a "Wheel". Now are you really
confused? This type "Wheel" consist of a center metal hub bolted to
wooden spokes surrounded by a metal ring. The "Rim" is bolted to the
ring using nuts with a spacer / washer devise called a "Lug".
So, in conclusion, the rim below is not a wheel, and the
wheel is not a rim, but present day cars and light duty trucks used wheels
that can be called wheels or rims, as both items became one. |
